A Walk About in the neighborhood...

As part of our orientation, our guide took us on a walk about the neighborhood in order to give us an idea of village life for the average "Citizen" in the area. This is a portion of John's familiy's home. You can see Mama is working with the bananas, which grow all over the place!
Here is Marcus, the Orientation Director, standing with John, the pig farmer. He has quite the operation going...has about 30 pigs. The entire Center gives him all our wet garbage for his pigs. We met his brother, who makes artifacts, mainly out of bamboo, that John brings to Lapilo to sell.
John is very proud of his operation -- it's a lot of work. Some villagers let their pigs run loose, but if they get into someone else's garden, then they're held liable, and it's a complicated things between the families to make it "even."
Can you believe the size of this bamboo? Some varieties grow 3' a day! It's actually considered a grass. Who would have guessed? In front of us is a pile of firwood, which is pruned branches of coffee bushes. Coffee must be pruned quite regularly in order to produce well. With a 12 month growing season, it has to be done a lot. We have 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of night...every day all year.

  2. Dearest Glenda,
My warmest greetings and long distance hugs to you both! Thank you for this blog. It is neat to follow you even so far away. Ok, I admit in some circumstances technology is a treat! Such as it is in this case.
Kids and I are well aside from all the germy bugs that keep floating around and wreaking havoc!
I am so glad that you are in love with Jesus and experiencing the abundant life no matter where you are or what you are doing!
Blessing galore be upon you and may all of your efforts be successful!
    With lots of love, Flensea

  3. Tom and Glenda,
Thank you for sharing your experience with those of us at home. We are excited for you. I know how much you both wanted to experience the missionary life. We think about you often - probably because you are so very far away. Keep posting when you can. We love to see how things are going for you.
    Hugs to you both!
    Gail and Pete
